Jacksonville, AL — Innovative Facility to Provide Safety and Community Space
Jacksonville State University (JSU) has embarked on a transformative project to enhance campus safety and resilience with the construction of a new multi-use storm shelter. The initiative, funded by a 75% Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant, signifies a significant step towards bolstering the university’s preparedness for severe weather events.
Construction on the state-of-the-art storm shelter commenced over spring break, marking the beginning of JSU’s campus transformation endeavor. The site, located adjacent to Bennett Field near Paul Carpenter Village, has seen the erection of fencing to establish a safety perimeter for the ongoing construction activities.
Once completed, the 16,000 square foot facility will serve as a refuge from severe weather for approximately 3,000 members of the JSU community, as well as the public. Equipped with the latest technology and safety features, the storm shelter will provide essential protection during tornadoes and other extreme weather events.
What sets this project apart is its multi-use design, which will offer versatility beyond its primary function as a storm shelter. In addition to providing safety during emergencies, the facility will be available for use by various university organizations, including the Marching Southerners and other approved groups. This flexibility underscores JSU’s commitment to maximizing the utility of campus infrastructure to benefit the entire community.

While the project is slated for completion in early Summer of 2025, it is expected to impact parking and activities in the vicinity of the construction site over the next 14 months. JSU urges individuals to exercise caution when moving about in the area and to refrain from entering the designated work zone for safety reasons.
