Mount Shishaldin has been cooling down since an eruption on Friday created an ash cloud across the Aleutians’ east and prompted an Alaska Volcano Observatory to raise the color code for aviation to red.

This was the latest stratovolcano eruption in the summer with increased activity.

Shishaldin can be described as the most awe-inspiring point of Shishaldin, which is the highest peak in Aleutian chain, reaching 9,373 feet. It is located near the middle of Unimak Island, about 20 miles from the fishing village located in False Pass.

The observatory noted that activity have slowed considerably following the eruption on Friday and that activity is now back to levels prior to the eruption.
