Calhoun County Two-Man Trio

Calhoun County, AL – Cole-Wigington, Lewis-Rollins and Wells-Wilborn emerge on top after first round of Calhoun County Team Championship (Includes scores and Sunday tee times)

SILVER LAKES — The Calhoun County Team Championship is about two-man teams, but a trio of teams emerged from Saturday’s first round tied for the lead.

Ty Cole-Gary Wigington, John Rollins-Vance Lewis and Tanner Wells-Chandler Wilborn all shot 12-under-par 60 at Silver Lakes.

Andrew Gunnels-Jeff Chapman and Scott Martin-Randy Reaves sit two strokes back headed into Sunday’s final round of the annual kickoff event for the Calhoun County Golf Tour.

Last year’s winners, Brandon Hammond-John Harman, did not return. Sunday’s final-round showdown sets up as a clash between the long-time headliner tandem on the county tour, Cole-Wigington, and two first-time teams in this event.

Cole-Wigington finished fourth in 2023 but improved their first-round score by four strokes Saturday, matching Hammon-Harman’s first-round 60.

Cole-Wigington 5 under par after six holes then hit a stretch of five pars. They left opportunities for better on the course, Wigington said.

“We wasn’t having long putts,” he said. “We were just missing 10-and-12-footers there in the middle of the round, and just five pars in a row kills us.

“Other than that, it was good. We played solid other than that. It was just those five pars. You can’t have those in this format.”

Wells-Wilborn and Lewis-Rollins had similar missed opportunities but wound up tied atop the championship flight.

Wells and Wilborn have played side-action events together, but Saturday marked their first appearance as a tandem in the county two-man. The pairing started when Wells needed a partner when usual partner Kevin Daugherty had a conflict,

Wilborn “was my next guy,” Wells said. “Usually, he don’t play in this kind of stuff, or I would’ve asked him the first time”

Lewis-Rollins was first of the three co-leading tandems to finish Saturday.

They’re not new playing together, just in the county two-man. They’re members at Cherokee Pines had played a two-man event there “that didn’t go well for us,” Lewis said. He’d worked a 12-hour shift the night before they played.

“We’re good friends,” Lewis said. “We try to play together as much as we can.”

They’re entering their third season on the Calhoun County tour and flexed as a tandem in the season’s kickoff event.

“We played our butt off to get to 12 under today,” Lewis said. “Extremely happy with what we did, and we’ve got another day of it. That’s what we’ve got to do.”
