Jacksonville, AL – Dr. Morgan led the presentation of applicants to the Jacksonville City Boar of Education on February 28th, 2024. Dr. Morgan stated, This may be the best group that we’ve ever had to apply” He also noted that there were 21 to apply, 16 from Alabama, one from Montana, one from Iowa , and three from Georgia. Dr. Morgan was asked to compile a list of the top five applicants.

  • Dr. Jeffrey Atkins from Alabaster. He went to Jacksonville State. He got his Masters, EDS, and Doctorate from Stanford.  He has been a high school teacher and coach at Shelby County Schools. He was assistant principal at the middle school as a middle school principal. He’s been in our central office for 10 years. He also has been to the superintendent Academy.
  • Dr. Michael Barber went to Jacksonville State and received his master’s in EDS. He got his doctorate from Temple Baptist seminary. I did not know that about Dr. Barber. He has experience as a teacher in Talladega, Assistant Principal Elementary Principal and was Assistant Superintendent for 10 years. Then he became superintendent there, and he was there for six years.
  • Mr. Elgin Dixon from Georgia has eight years experience as a superintendent. He stayed in one district for a long time until he became superintendent. He was teacher guidance counselor, Assistant Middle School, principal elementary school principal middle school principal. He became an assistant high school principal, all this is in Dublin City Schools. Then he went to the central office as director of operations for two years. He then moved to federal programs from Director of Operations. Then he went to federal programs same in a central office.
  • Mr. Heath Harmon is the principal at Oxford High School. He went to Jacksonville State for his bachelors and his Masters at Alabama.  He’s finished his coursework on his doctoral program and he’s working on his dissertation. He’s been assistant middle school principal. Then he came here to Oxford as assistant elementary principal and then then he’s been the high school principal for eight years.
  • Miss Bridget Stewart works here in your central office. She was elementary principal here. She then left your district and went to Piedmont for seven or eight years and has done well at turning that school around. She’s increased the state report card. She got her master’s at Jacksonville State. She lives here.

 

There will be additional interviews conducted. The next board meeting will be March 14th. No decision is expected in March.
