Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (JSU) has recently become a member of the National Association for Collegiate Esports (NACE), marking its entry into the rapidly growing world of esports. Esports, a term derived from electronic sports, involves competitive gaming where teams and individuals engage in tournaments for various prizes.

Despite initial perceptions of esports as a mere pastime, the industry has evolved into a juggernaut, currently valued at around $1.2 billion. Projections indicate a substantial 60 percent growth by 2027, forecasting a market value of approximately $1.92 billion by the time the current freshman class at JSU completes their studies. Recognizing this significant trend, the university has strategically integrated esports into different degree curriculums, offering minors in Esports and Game Design, with plans for a future major in Esports.

JSU has a history of esports involvement through teams such as JSU Level Up and Fowl Play, with a focus on competitive gaming for several years. However, this marks the first year that Jax State is eligible to compete at the varsity level in NACE. The university’s esports league, based out of Longleaf Studios, currently competes in Rocket League, with future plans to expand into genres like Apex Legends, Super Smash Brothers, and Valorant.

Matt Chumley, the JSU director of technology support and advisor to the league, emphasized the university’s commitment to establishing a program and space that fosters collaboration among students from diverse academic backgrounds. Chumley highlighted the multifaceted opportunities within esports, extending beyond gameplay to roles in broadcasting, streaming, on-air talent, graphic design, video editing, and social media management. The objective is to offer hands-on experience in the esports studio, providing students with valuable additions to their portfolios and resumes.

Esports competitions not only offer a platform for students to engage in competitive gaming but also serve as an environment for developing essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. The league typically holds competitions on Mondays at 6 p.m. at Longleaf Studios. For students interested in joining the league or contributing to its production team, further details are available on the esports website.
