They were promised a world trip. However, the cruise line Life at Sea recently told those who purchased a ticket on a three-year cruise that instead of visiting 140 nations, their trip had been ended.

Customers are looking for new plans about where they’ll be staying over the coming three yearsand also to get reimbursements for the line. The raging fallout has drawn the comparisons with notorious disasters like those of Fyre Festival — the “luxury” music festival which was more of the term “disaster relief zone.”

Here’s what you need to know concerning the voyage around globe that was cancelled

What was the promise? The world.

The original route was 1,095 days of travel beginning to Istanbul to Europe and finally towards South America and the Caribbean. Travelers then had to travel by and through the Panama Canal before seeing the U.S. West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska – including Juneau and Juneau — and travel towards the West across Pacific.

“We will be following summer all the duration of our travels across the globe,” then-Life at Sea CEO Kendra Holmes told prospective passengers in the Zoom webinar on September.

Voyagers planned to travel across seven continents and visit 140 countries. They’d spend about 300 days on the sea and and 795 days at ports and would enjoy 413 overnight port stays chief operating officer Ethem Bayramoglu, of Miray Cruises, the Turkish parent company of Life at Sea, said in the live session.

On their way they will visit the amazing places around the globe as well as go to UNESCO World Heritage sites and have plenty of opportunities to go diving or snorkeling, according to the company stated.

The trip was scheduled to start on November. 1 and depart from Istanbul. The passengers reportedly learned of the cancellation upon arriving in Turkey.

What do customers say about their experience?

“Some people look at their headlines only to think”Oh, it was an enigma and I was a bit more cautious prior to putting a deposit in,” Keri Witman of Cincinnati said to NPR. She had lawyers check the background of the company for instance.

Witman is the owner of an agency that promotes marketing, Clever Lucy she was preparing to work remotely on the vessel, through its Starlink Internet service. Being a single female she was eager to travel the world together with her friends.

“Having a community of like-minded people who were all interested in travelling and having a travel plan was very attractive for me.” She said.

In the event that the cruise did not meet the departure date it was scheduled for The company said it would resolve any remaining issues. After further delays, the cruise was cancelled.

Witman states that the company has started the process of refunding, taking her request for any other expenses that need to be covered such as airfare, to expenses of foreign visas. However, certain of her customers are more upset.

“Still in the process of getting my money back. You’ve now gone to the stomach?” a woman who identified herself as a Life at Sea customer posted in recent posts on their Instagram page. The woman, who is a retired teacher, did not reply to NPR’s call for additional information.

The former air staff member Meredith Shay was looking forward to this trip as the main event in her final days.

“How do I feel?” Shay said in an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America . “Devastated Sad, depressed, and disappointed. I packed my possessions and put them in storage and then I gave four containers for Miray Cruises.”

Witman mentions that she also sent boxes for the cruise. She returned in the beginning of October.

“I’m following them on the AirTags I have today” the woman said. “They’re returning.”

What was the cost of you pay for the Life at Sea cruise cost?

The most affordable packages began at $196,000 for one traveler or $231,000 for a couple in accordance with the website of the company. Prices were much more expensive when guests stayed in the most luxurious rooms.

For their money, travelersor residents as they were referred to by the company were offered many amenities that included an on-board medical clinic and hospital. Some cabins may even have pets; passengers were offered high-speed internet and free meals, as well as laundry and alcohol services and “enrichment workshops.”

The terms of the agreement will help to clarify potential passengers their logistical and financial challenges. Life at Sea set initial deposits at 30% of the total cost. In its 12-month payment schedule the first draw would be due one month before the sailing date.

Instead of splitting the cruise available for sale in smaller parts The company demanded clients to commit to the entire three years.

“Our residents have made a change in their lives due to this chance, and we’re proud to be a part their journeys to personal fulfillment,” Holmes said in June.

Many passengers booked cabins.

“The age range is divided roughly from 35-85” years old. the passengers include a huge amount of Americans, Holmes said.

Do you know if the cruise company really had a ship?

“In two days we will own this vessel,” Life at Sea itinerary organizer Robert Dixon said in the latter part of September during an advertisement footage from the bridge on a boat that he referred to as”MV Lara “MV Lara.”

However, the company was unable to conclude the contract, and the vessel at issue – the AIDAaura, which is 20 years old -waswas instead transferred the following month to Celestyal which is a specialist on Mediterranean cruises.

Miray’s efforts to buy the ship took months, but it was eventually stopped after investors resisted in accordance with a company communication that was obtained from CNN as well as other news outlets.

“If you’re focusing on the ship, this isn’t the right choice suitable for you” Holmes said in the webinar held in September. However, two months later Holmes would resign from her leadership position with Life at Sea and Miray when plans for the cruise fell apart.

Holmes was trying to alleviate concerns regarding the quality and safety of the boat. It appears, however, that it was the focus of the company rather than the public’s which was the issue.

The warning flags were raised earlier in the year, after the company shifted its strategy from its original plan to refurbish one of its vessels that was in which was the MV Gemini. To make the long-distance voyage it had planned to use one of its larger ships, the “MV Lara” — a vessel which never came to fruition.

What will the cruise line tell us now?

It’s complicated. It was Sunday when Miray Cruises issued a statement in Turkish and denied the cruise was cancelled. Instead, the company stated that the trip was postponedand blamed it on an insufficient number of passengers bookings, not difficulties in finding a suitable vessel.

However, in response to a social media comment on that statement, the company wanted to make clear that other activities aren’t affected and, while doing this, it stated, “The cancellation in question is a result of our three-year world tour.”

The company stated that anyone who asks for a refund will receive one. It will cover travel expenses relating with the trip. Miray is also stating that it plans to host a similar trip in the coming year.

Witman is one of them. She states she’s interested in an international cruise.

“There are two firms that are working on similar ideas” which have encountered problems, she added.

“I believe that one of them will be able to make it happen in 2024,”” Witman said. “And I’m optimistic that it will happen, as I’d like to be a part of the front lines of it. I’m still a believer in the idea. I believe that it’s a great chance that I am looking forward to.”

Despite the setbacks, Witman says she’s been in a position to connect with others who are interested in traveling, who’ve kept connected through group texts and apps. Some are planning to travel together in the winter.

“I do not regret taking this route,” Witman said. “It led me to move ahead in a manner that I would not have been able to achieve without the instigation of this. I’m truly grateful for it. I’m sad, but I’m prepared for any opportunity that comes my way in the future.”
